Description:

Adds California as a playable independent nation, complete with a focus tree, events, bookmark placement, AI strategy options, and even a unique intelligence agency. And of course, a few easter eggs.

Focus Tree

The focus tree has political paths for every ideology, mainly split into two ways of playing: do you gain support for the elections, or take power in a swift motion (and potentially cause a civil war)? Afterwards, you’re given options for alliances, territorial expansion, and of course wargoals.
Besides that, there’s a very large combined industry/research/military tree that gives lots of boosts to your nation.

Leaders

In 1936, you start with the California Democrats in power, led by Frank Merriam, who was Governor at the time in our normal timeline. In the November 1936 elections he is beaten by Republic Party frontrunner, famous actor Ronald Reagan.
The Socialist Party, which may choose to rebrand itself as End Poverty In California (EPIC), is led by known writer Upton Sinclair.
Our fascists, who rally behind the California Identity party, are led by a couple of Army chiefs – one of whom might harbor a familiar face – who may decide to form a military junta.
And, last but not least, are the Nortonists, who rally behind our great Emperor, Norton II! – he may be an impostor, or a time-travelling clone of his predecessor; don’t look too deeply into it – Under his reign, you can finally enforce many of Norton’s famous decrees, including the abolition of Congress.

Easter eggs?

Well, I won’t spoil them here, but there are a few references and witty jabs here and there… I will say that something special happens if California engages in nuclear warfare.

Coming Soon

A new, more expansive, and more fun to play political focus tree for California is in the works, giving more depth to the different parties and ideologies – more options for territorial expansion, and different ways to achieve it depending on ideology.
After that, expect new independent state mods: among the more interesting ideas are Louisiana, Deseret, and Alaska.

Disclaimers

This mod splits California into 6 states. Because of that, it is incompatible with any other mod that adds new states. That’s just how it works, and making this and another mod compatible would mean having one require the other.
If you have all the DLC enabled, California’s flag will be a little out of bounds in the 1936 starting menu (as seen in one of the screenshots). This is only a graphical thing and just due to the amount of different flags present.
Some of the bonuses given in the focus tree could very well be considered OP to an extent, namely manpower and research boosts that can make it surprisingly easy to win a war against the USA. So you’ve been warned.
I never have and probably never will play Road to 56 or any other overhaul/total conversion mod, so please don’t ask me whether this is compatible or to make a compatibility submod, because I wouldn’t even know where to start.
And finally, this should be compatible with most other mods that don’t add states. I’ve playtested this in conjunction with the same mods I usually play with, but there are almost 28,000 mods on the workshop right now. Incompatibilities are bound to exist.
