Folk Hero
The Frisian Freedom saw a war between the Vetkopers and Schieringers, but this period was quickly ended by the Frankish Empire. During this period the franks seized the low lands and converted the frisians to christianity by force.
Eventually this empire would fall and be later succeeded by the Holy Roman Empire.
During these times many counts and dukes aimed on the frisian regions to rule them.
Many battles were fought between hired mercenaries and the population.
Eventually because a count couldn’t rule frisia he sold it to the count of Holland.
This changed the conflict between the count and the frisians, into a conflict against Holland.
Somewhere at Kimswerd in 1480 there was a farmer who didn’t want to be involved in the struggle. Mercenaries taxed the population nonetheless in which he grew tired of, fought many, and witnessing the burning of his farm and the murder of his wife Rintje and his kids. His son Gerlof died, but his daughter Wobbel survived. He gathered men willing to join his cause. A rebellion was born and the ‘Arumer Swarte Heap’ fought to drive the mercenaries out of frisia and continued fighting at sea against the dutch. This is the story of Pier Gerlofs Donia. To many he was a pirate, to the dutch he was known as ‘The Fright of the Zuiderzee’, to the frisians, he was known as Grutte Pier, the Frisian Freedom fighter.
The Southern Netherlands and Northern province of the Netherlands saw great dissatisfaction.
On the 25th of August 1830, the Belgian and Frisian Revolutions broke out simultaneously.
Dutch troops were moving both into the North and South when Willem I called off the offense,
as he was under pressure of France who threatened with an intervention to protect the newly self-proclaimed state of Belgium.
Conflicts in Frisia continued to spread and in Drenthe dutch forces were struggling to keep order. In 1839 the Treaty of Londen was signed where the independence of the new states were recognised.
