"At this moment my thoughts are more than ever with my country and my compatriots in the Netherlands and the Netherlands Indies. After an age-old historical solidarity, in which had long since passed the era of colonial relationship, we stood on the eve of a collaboration on a basis of equality when suddenly we were both confronted by the present ordeal. The treacherous aggression on the Netherlands in 1940 was the first interruption in the process of development; the heroic battle of the Netherlands Indies, followed by the occupation of the major part of this territory in 1942, was the second. […]
I visualize, without anticipating the recommendations of the future conference, that they will be directed towards a commonwealth in which the Netherlands. Indonesia, Surinam and Curacao will participate, with complete self-reliance and freedom of conduct for each part regarding its internal affairs, but with the readiness to render mutual assistance. It is my opinion that such a combination of independence and collaboration can give the Kingdom and its parts the strength to carry fully their responsibility, both internally and externally. This would leave no room for discrimination according to race or nationality; only the ability of the individual citizens and the needs of the various groups of the population will determine the policy of the government."
~ Radio address by Queen Wilhelmina on 7 December 1942[www.houseofdavid.ca], one year after the Attack on Pearl Harbour, and nine months after the Dutch Indies’ capitulation at Kalidjati, West Java
The 1930s was an interesting time in the Dutch East Indies, with the political situation were quite untenable in the aftermath of the internment of several prominent Indonesian nationalists alongside Indonesian communists in Eastern Indonesia, amongst it is the infamous Boven Digul Camp in Dutch New Guinea. Reeling with the effects of the Malaise, inadequate military in both weaponary, manpower, and discipline, and also the reactionary Governor-General Bonifacius de Jonge who approaches his 61st birthday, the East Indies is at a crossroads in 1936.
This mod is a stand-alone rework of the Indonesian-related contents in REDLINK’s "Hollandia Historica: Dutch Focus Tree", aimed to better portray the historical situation of the Indies in mid 1930s until late 1940s. As such, no more Westerling or Suharto in 1937, but lots of historical characters has been added to the game such as Hubertus van Mook, Mohammad Husni Thamrin, and Tan Malaka, military officers such as Hendrikus Ferwerda, Gerardus Berenschot, and Urip Sumoharjo, and many others!
1. Maintain the fragile balance between the Dutch conservatives who has the backing of both KNIL officers and Western corporatists, and the Dutch progressives who has the backing of the Indonesian elites, and in turn, the 60-million strong Indonesian nation, in face of the imminent conflict in the Pacific in the near future? Or:
2. Push forward and (with blessing of the Indonesians) put the Stuwgroep in the Raad van Indie, ensuing that the idea of an Indies dominion within the Dutch Commonwealth would be realized sooner, and alongside that, reform both the East Indies government and military, while dealing with both rigid militarists and unbowed European corporatists, before Japan comes down knocking?
3. Close down the Volksraad and put an end to the Indonesian Independence Movement with the help of Dutch (or German) paramilitaries, cut your ties with the weak democrats and reclaim the glory of Dutch Empire of old?
4. Resist the impending crackdown and establish a new Indonesian Republic as Sutomo’s Great Indonesia Party. Then either seek help from Japan and liberate Asia from the colonialists together, or make amends with the Westerners and stand against fascism?
5. Spark off the Second Indonesian Revolution with the help of the Indonesian Communist Party, and then either embark on an Anti-Colonialist Struggle against both the Western and Japanese Imperialists alone, or seek help from the existing International?
6. With a ‘secret’ evacuation of [DATA EXPUNGED], put an end of Dutch Imperialism as the [DATA EXPUNGED], and either embark on an Anti-Imperialist struggle or help Japan to drive off the Westerners?
