Struggling in the North East: The Hailar Clique
What if in 1932 Ma Zhanshan and his Anti-Japanese volunteer armies successfully beat back Japan from Northern Manchuria?
Well this mod answers that question, after 2 years of war, a lot of Soviet aid and a number of surprising victories the newly proclaimed "North East Anti-Japanese Salvation Government", or simply the Hailar Clique under Ma Zhanshan, signs a truce with the Japanese, known as the Songhua Ceasefire effectively ending hostilities between the two.
Despite this victory by 1936 the young Hailar Clique is in a difficult situation. Isolated off from the rest of China there is a notable feeling of sadness and abandonment amongst the people. This isolation makes the state quite vulnerable both to growing Soviet influence and Japanese provocation.
Within the Salvation Council, the governing body of the Clique, turmoil is brewing. Ma Zhanshan has decided to step back from governing in order to focus on the army, offering the position to one of three considered generals. Feng Zhanhai, Kim Il-sung (yes him) and Zhang Jinghui are all in the running but only one will come out on top.
