My name is Hans. I’m an ordinary tank driver in the 11th German Light Armored Division. Today is June 22, 1941, the Führer announced the attack on the Soviet Union in the early hours of this morning, and our tank clusters went as fast as they could, running on one foot of gas to Kiev, only to find out that they were out of gas and couldn’t run. Looking back, it turned out that the supply railroad would be replaced for another 10 days, so we had to use the tanks as fixed turrets, and all the generals sat in silence outside Kiev, and I watched all the officers and men push the tanks in unison to move them forward little by little, and lit up a cigarette, and thought to myself, “Guderian is really a big smart guy!”
