Introduction

My own take on a HOI3-like unit counter, using linwajun’s excellent hoi3 counter as a base. This mod covers all types of unit counters in game – land, navy, railway guns, and air wing unit counters.

It’s not an exact copy but I tried to make sure it’s as close as possible by using the original gfx files from HOI3, though with a few modifications. I’ve decided to retain the strength/org bars just for the sake of familiarity and playability, since removing them might be a big difficulty jump for some players.

Since this is a HOI3-inspired mod, it’s designed to be used with NATO counters enabled – though it will look just fine without it. To make things look more consistent, this mod also changes the plane and ship icons to look more like HOI3’s implementation of them.

Counter Sizes

It comes in two sizes as well, you can switch depending on your preference.

  • Large size, for those who want something closer and faithful to the HOI3 look.
  • Small size, for those who want something closer in size to vanilla counters.

By default, the mod uses the small size option.

How to Switch Counter Sizes
  1. Navigate to your Steam installation folder (Default installation folder is C:Program Files (x86)Steam)
  2. Navigate to steamappsworkshopcontent394360 which is where the HOI4 workshop downloads are located.
  3. Search for this mod’s folder, which should be 3412910830, then open it.
  4. Open the [OPTIONS] folder, which contains the counter size options.
  5. Open your desired size option’s folder, then copy all the folders inside.
  6. Go back from the [OPTIONS] into this mod’s root folder, then paste the copied folders. Overwrite when asked.


If somehow things get messed up and you lost the options file for each, unsub then resub to redownload everything.

How to Fix Mod Incompatibilities

This mod will conflict with anything that changes the unit counters. In case another mod you’re using is somehow causing incompatibilities with this mod, such as this mod’s files being overwritten, do the following:

  1. Go to your Documents folder.
  2. Navigate to the Paradox InteractiveHearts of Iron IVmod folder.
  3. Open this mod’s descriptor file, which should be named ugc_3412910830.mod, with your preferred text editor. Notepad should work just fine.
  4. Insert the name of the conflicting mod into the dependencies section. For example:
    dependencies={ "Insert Conflicting Mod’s Name Here" "Insert Another Conflicting Mod’s Name Here" }

    Note that your changes may be overwritten when this mod is updated. If wanted, you can post any mod’s name conflicting with this mod in the comments and I can test and add it in here myself.

  5. Save the changes. It should work without any conflicts now (hopefully)
