Reformed Armed Forces – Extended
"Reformed Armed Forces – Extended"
(compatible with current HOI4 DLCs.)
I like a challenging game when playing a major, and I like to give minors a better chance when fighting against majors, so where possible bonuses are larger for minors than for majors; e.g., majors getting less units via decisions or a smaller bonus via focus in the ‘high council’. To stay immersive, those differences don’t show up. If you play a major different bonuses are visible than when you play a minor. Also I tried to keep every addition optional – in the background. For example: If you don’t activate ‘limited rights’ for women, you’ll never even see the option to enlist female volunteers.
most important features:
– extended government & law-options (stand alone but compatible with r56 and its gender laws; using r56-slots)
– adapted Division Designer and implemented my own set of specialized support companies
– better transition for promoting field commanders to generals by adding a service medal for veteran field commanders and tweaking the applied bonus
– decision for limited female service enabling generic female generals to become field commanders and added some event-driven female-troops-templates
– generic female portraits (updated and extended with more ethnic variants in may 2025)
– more available generic male generals
– more skill levels (up to 18)
– additional medal and ranking system
– to get promoted a general has to command a minimum amount of divisions, the lower the rank the less troops required
– military high command and academy
– automatic promotion by the military high command is granted once a month during a meeting of the general staff which increases command power by a small fixed amount
– you can promote generals one skill level earlier, the higher the rank the more command power will be gained
– you can promote individual generals to field marshals and the RAF-rank as well as skill-dependent permanent and temporary traits will be applied
– a loyal new field marshal will increase political power
For the medal part I started on base of another mod, "GSP’s National Decorations", but changed it to something different, which fitted better to my rank-system like for example temporary skill-boosts provided by the academy, though you still might find some code-snippets from the original modder.
Keep in mind that when assigning too many divisions to a general he will not gain much experience. this can be a bit difficult at start when the limit for newly created brigadiers (=new lowest rank generals) is just 2 divisions. but that is intentional 🙂
I increased the range of max-divisions cap, from lowest rank who can command just 2 divisions to highest rank who can command 38 divisions which can be even more increased by vanilla traits and academy boosts (Army Staff College increases command limit) to an absolute max of 47 divisions.

This mod (english localisation only) adds ranks because I wasn’t satisfied with just corps commanders and field marshals, so I reduced the initial capacity to a MAX of 2 divisions for basic/designated corps commanders and 2 armies for basic/designated field marshals. To increase that max you will have to promote your leaders to a more realistic variety of ranks like major general, lieutenant general, colonel general and so on.
Furthermore I changed the division designer to represent the command structures I had in mind. Up to 10 support companies and 30 combat companies visually structured in battalions and brigades combined into 1 division.
I made this mod for my own enjoyment, so it’s based on my personal hoi4 configuration including all major DLCs, but I don’t see, why it shouldn’t work for other configurations too.
Don’t expect extensive bug-fixing. As I said, I made it for my own enjoyment, not intending to escalate the fun into work 😉
Feel free to test it, use it, change it or include it in your own mods.

Known issues:
Currently not using pics of female officers correctly for RAJ_UK and possibly also RAJ.
Female field commanders of these countries will have the default silhouette! Therefore decision ‘Recruit Female Volunteers’ for these countries is deactivated, because for me it’s immersion-breaking.
I haven’t yet tested all countries, but tested and working as of now are:
SOV, AST, PRU, BRA, CHN, HUN, TUR, MEX, ♥♥♥, ITA, GER, FRA, ENG, AUS, URG, USA
