Byzantium Restored – Alternate Timeline
Eleftherios Venizelos secured a decisive victory in the 1920 elections, the Catastrophe of Asia Minor was averted through unwavering liberal leadership. The Hellenic Army successfully defeated the Kemalist insurgency, enforcing the Treaty of Lausanne from a position of absolute strength, thus securing Thrace and the western shores of Anatolia. This triumph resulted in the proclamation of the Byzantine Republic, with Constantinople restored as its eternal capital and the northern State of Rhodope established as a loyal and strategic buffer state.
However, beneath the glory of the "Megali Idea" fulfilled, the Republic is a house divided. The tragic death of King Alexander did not lead to a royal restoration; instead, the Venizelist establishment barred the return of the exiled Glucksburgs, leaving King George II to rot in western courts.
Today, Byzantium is locked in a bitter two-party struggle where the progressive Venizelists fight to modernize the state, while embittered Monarchists plot to reclaim the throne, threatening to tear the reborn Empire apart from within as the storm clouds of a second Great War gather.
