As the last ray of the twentieth century faded from the horizon of the world, no one could know for sure to whom the coming millennium would belong.
On the eastern horizon, an ancient country bearing five millennia of civilization and more than a century of modern humiliation is lifting its head from the depths of history. Among all the world’s ancient civilizations, only Chinese civilization, despite dynastic changes, foreign invasions, and a century of war, has remained unbroken. Contemporaries of ancient Egypt and Babylon, the descendants of the Yan and Huang Emperors still speak a language passed down for millennia and tend the land their ancestors first cultivated. But between the resilience of civilization and the revival of a nation lies a long and arduous road. Since the cannons of the Opium War blasted open the gates of China, generation after generation of Chinese people have asked repeatedly: Why did China fall behind? How can China revive?
Twenty years of reform and opening up have injected vigorous vitality into this country, yet the reefs in the deep waters remain uncleared. State-owned enterprises carry heavy historical burdens, tens of millions of workers face layoffs and restructuring; between sprawling rural areas and coastal cities stands a growing wealth gap; the tax-sharing reform has reshaped fiscal relations between central and local governments but also sown the seeds for the future expansion of land-transfer-based local finance. The WTO accession negotiations have raged for over a decade—behind the agreement lies a difficult balance between protecting domestic industries and opening up, between safeguarding and ceding economic sovereignty. Meanwhile, across the Taiwan Strait, separatist forces quietly accumulate strength; the smoke of the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Yugoslavia has barely cleared, yet new storms are brewing in the skies over the South China Sea.
Yet unprecedented opportunities have also emerged. The wave of globalization embeds countries within a refined network of division of labor; the information technology revolution is bridging the gap between latecomers and pioneers. A vast market and massive labor force of 1.3 billion people, once activated, will unleash an economic energy never seen before in human history. The rise of the internet gives those catching up a chance to overtake on a curve, and gives silent voices a channel to express themselves for the first time. The old power structure is crumbling, and a new order has yet to form—this is a moment full of uncertainty, and therefore a moment to reshape destiny.
History is not a train running predictably on fixed rails. It is a raging river where every bend brings forces that silently compete to change the flow. In the coming century, this ancient country will make strategic choices amid a global wave of terrorism that will alter the world order; it will show a refreshed face to the world under the Olympic flame; it will deliver a stunning response amid a once-in-a-century financial tsunami; it will repeatedly temper its sinews and soul amidst disasters and crises. Standing at the crossroads of the millennium, every choice you make will leave an indelible mark on the riverbed of history.
“Millennium Dawn: The Great Rejuvenation” is a deeply expanded Chinese sub-module of the renowned modern mod "Millennium Dawn." Beginning in 2000 and centered on China, it fully covers the governance of three generations of leadership in the new millennium. Through an extensive national policy tree, a socio-political spectrum-based ideological system, a political decision-making circle composed of real historical figures, hundreds of key historically reconstructed events, and a deeply tense balancing mechanism between livelihood and national strength, you will personally command the revival path of an ancient civilization at the turn of the century, witnessing a great nation’s struggles and sacrifices to realize a millennial dream.
· TGR currently supports game version 1.19.*. All DLCs can be enabled—simply launch the game normally;
· TGR must load the "Millennium Dawn: A Beta Test Mod" as a prerequisite mod (already added to this project’s "Required Items"). It is strongly recommended to install the "The Great Rejuvenation Music Pack" for an enhanced audiovisual experience;
· Due to extensive custom content overrides, we do not recommend loading additional mods simultaneously. If you cannot enter the game, please try removing extra mods and check whether the game runs normally;
· For English players, we are updating the latest English localization. Since AI is used for the translation, we hope you’ll be understanding if you come across any translation errors.
Since its release, "The Great Rejuvenation" has been beloved by many players, but its development has not been smooth. After the original author ceased updates for personal reasons, a group of devoted community members formed the "Great Rejuvenation (Community Edition)" to continue the original vision.
However, the community edition’s further development encountered difficulties. The former community leader displayed unstable personal mental states, issued controversial statements publicly, and proposed alternate-history creative directions. After discussions with the mod team and the music pack author, it was concluded that the community leader’s vision diverged from the original intent, and that personal issues made continuing his leadership untenable. As project ownership could neither be transferred nor handed off, the mod team decided to separate from the original community project and create a new community effort for ongoing updates.
This mod is the product of that decision. We honor the original creator’s intent by adhering to a serious historical narrative, striving to portray every pivotal crossroads of the Chinese nation’s great rejuvenation within a framework rooted in real history.
