Roma Delenda Est
Following the botched month-long Second Italo-Abyssinian War that resulted in Mussolini losing his East African colonies, his opponents within the Military and National Fascist Party took advantage of his unpopularity, attempting to stage a coup d’etat to out Il Duce.
The coup was a failure, but before they were apprehended, Gabriele D’Annunzio lead a group of Mussolini’s opponents into Italian North Africa.
With the support of the locals, D’Annunzio declares the formation of the Carthaginian Empire, opposed to “Mussolini’s Roman Empire”, declaring himself Hannibal II of Carthage, a decedent of the great Hannibal Barca. Eager to support opponents to Mussolini, France recognizes the new nation, and even cedes Tunisia to the new Carthaginian government. Having moved his seat of government to Carthage (formerly Tunis), the Carthaginian Empire is no longer a nation in name only.
Hannibal II is prepared to reclaim the Carthaginian Empire, and finally salt the soil of Rome itself. Roma Delenda Est!
