TNO: English Names for ALL Countries
As you know, in TNO mod some countries (and factions) have names in their native languages (Endonym) such as Großgermanisches Reich(Germany) and Dai-Nippon Teikoku(Japan), although most countries have English names. I agree that they look cool, but they are sometimes hard to understand.
Apply English names for all countries.
Example:
- Großgermanisches Reich→Greater Germanic Reich
- Reichskommissariat→Reich-Commissariat
- Dai-Nippon Teikoku→Empire of Japan
- Regno d’Italia→Kingdom of Italy
622 localisations are replaced.
This mod is also compatible with TNO: Operation Deep Freeze.
- I changed only country names on map. You may feel uncomfortable at times because I didn’t replace country names in other parts such as Focus Trees, Decisions, and Events.
- Since I cannot speak German (and Italian) at all, some translations might be incorrect. If you find mistakes or have suggestions/questions, please tell me in comment.
- Regular updates are not guaranteed. If you want to update or fix this mod yourself, you can copy files from this mod and re-upload fixed version of it to workshop.
- To TNO Devs: I have definitely no intention to demand abolition of country names in German/Japanese in TNO itself. On rather, I think they are greatly contributing to build dark and unique atmosphere of TNO, so this is a very good idea. I love your works. Keep Going!
Q: Why isn’t the German word “Reich” translated?
A: Despite the German word “Reich” being strongly related to monarchy since it was coming from Latin word “Regnum”(Kingdom), Weimar Republic continued to use country name “Deutsches Reich” which is familiar to people. After that, “Reich” cannot be translated as “Empire” and was redefined as “Realm” or “State”, but there weren’t completely correct translation for it. This is why interwar Germany was called “German Reich” and Paradox applied this name in vanilla Hoi4. Furthermore, in TNOTL, it can be expected that the word “Reich” will be promoted as a symbol, of strong Germany in Einheitspakt, of evil Nazis in OFN. For these reasons, I didn’t translate it.
Also, well-known German words such as Führer, Luftwaffe, and Schutzstaffel didn’t get translated.
Q: What is “Empire of Manchou”?
A: This was the official English name of Manchukuo. In “About Enactment of Our Country Name in English(本國國名英文制定ノ件)” from “Proclamation by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs No.5(外務部佈吿第五號)” on April 6 1934, Manchurian government has declared “Manchoutikuo” or “The Empire of Manchou” as their full names in English, and also “Manchoukuo” or “The Manchou Empire” as abbreviations of them.
I think the word “Manchuria” can be used for region name of northeastern China, but should be replaced by “Manchou” in the country name.
Q: “LORRAINE”…? DID YOU SAY “LORRAINE”, NOT “LOTHRINGEN”?
A: I basically used common English names for non-English place names.
Example:
- Lothringen→Lorraine
- Burgund→Burgundy
- Polen→Poland
- Moskowien→Muscovia
Q: Rumania isn’t Romania?
A: Currently I don’t know why the Devs changed the Romanian name, so I won’t think about this until I get an answer. If you are a member of TNO Dev or know why it is, please tell me.
I made this by myself in 3 days.
