The Coup:
Up until 1991 the Cold War goes as usual. In 1989 Berlin Wall is torn down and in the same year Warsaw Pact stops existing.
On 19th of August 1991 Soviet Army rolls into Moscow and the August Coup begins. State Committee on the State of Emergency is formed.
Leaders of the coup are the same as in OTL. By the 20th of August Boris Yeltsin has been found by KGB (lead by Vladimir Kryuchkov) and executed.
On the 22nd of August Gorbachev (under house arrest) officially resigned from the position of General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and has handed the position to the vice president of the USSR Gennady Yanayev.
With Dmitry Yazov as the defence minister and Boris Pugo the minister of the interior rooting out the final pro-Yeltsin elements from the military and state apparatus the August Coup officially ended on the 27th of August 1991.
There was no notable reaction from the public of the USSR considering that besides Gorbachev’s resignation, announcement of forming of the State Committee on the State of Emergency and news of Yeltsin’s death under "mysterious conditions" there was no TV broadcast of the coup.
Heads of the state aparatuses of various SSRs have supported the coup so there was almost no news of the coup besides Gorbachev’s resignation in various SSRs.
Only countries who have existed the Union were Estonia, Latvia, Armenia and Azerbaijan with pro-nationalist movements in Lithuania being crushed by swift action of Soviet forces in Kaliningrad Oblast.

Stagnation and uncertain future:
In the following 2 years CPSU went trough radical shift from reformism back to Brezhnev era politics.
Corruption and economic stagnation have weakened the country in the 1990s with military being put as the more important economic priority.
Nationalism and insurgency have begun to show it’s ugly face in regions of Ukrainian SSR and Chechnia.
Even tho severely weakened economically life standard in the USSR hasn’t crushed severely as life standard of Yeltsin era in OTL.
General Secretary Gennady Yanayev has been put in a hard position of managing the economy, corruption, rising separatism and party infighting between KGB, military and "reformist" sides of the party.
Only good news for USSR are that USA has shifted their attention from USSR to the new rising star of Asia, People’s Republic of China
Future of the union in the 21st century is uncertain.

Rest of the world:

USA/NATO:
News of the coup have been received badly in the USA and NATO countries who have hoped for a quick collapse of the USSR. With them increasing sanctions against the Soviet Union but shifting their attention elsewhere.
Bush and Clinton era in the USA go the same way as in OTL with globalism, Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and development of new technologies such as internet. With free market becoming dominant economic system in most countries.

Yugoslavia:
With the collapse of the Warsaw Pact Yugoslavia has found itself in a bad position. With it needing to repay IMF debt that has been gathered under Tito, Slobodan Milošević has turned to reforming socialism in Yugoslavia on the model of Deng Xiaoping’s reforms.
But with the combined false promises of freedom from the west, increasing debt and rise of nationalism, Yugoslavia was just a step away from exploding.
It all came to a breaking point on the 27th of June 1991 with the Slovenia declaring independence from SFRY.
What followed was the 10 day war which went the same as in OTL.
Soon followed Croatia on 8th of October 1991. But with Crotia having a big Serb population that has proclaimed Rpublic of Srpska Krajina as a defence of the Serb rights in Croatia war was imminent.
War in Croatia lasted until 1997 due to help from what remained of Yugoslavia (there was no direct military intervention of YPA unlike in OTL). With Croatia finally winning on the 10th of April 1997. What followed was ethnic cleansing and exodus of Serbs from Croatia to Serbia and Bosnia.
Conflict in Bosnia almost broke out in 1992 but due to quick action from State Security and Yugoslav People’s Army the war was stopped and Bosnia was put under direct military rule and has remained the part of Yugoslavia.
The area remains unstable with Yugoslavia suffering from sanctions, growing separatism in Bosnia.

Asia:
People’s Republic of China is continuing with Opening up and reforming and is becoming the dominant economic and military power in Asia.
