Background: The plot is set during the Cold War period (1946-1991). At that time, the Eastern and Western worlds engaged in an arms race in the pursuit of world hegemony. The existence of nuclear weapons made the threat of a Third World War a possibility, and the world faced the risk of destruction.
Gameplay: This is a stand-alone game, not an expansion pack of "Hearts of Iron III". Players can control and manage a country, covering aspects such as politics, diplomacy, espionage, economy, military affairs, and technology. Different from the previous games in the "Hearts of Iron" series, this game focuses on the diplomatic and political struggles among countries during the Cold War, rather than large-scale wars. Nuclear weapons can be used in the game, but they are restricted by the state of national emergency. In this game, you can control either the Soviet Union or the United States to win the Cold War.
The countries with a relatively high degree of game completion are: the Soviet Union, the United States, China, Republic of China, the United Kingdom, and France.
1946, 1948, 1950, 1961, 1979, 1991 – six playable scenarios, and a new 1982 scenario.
