Alternate Nation Names – Historically Plausible
—Alternate Nation Names—
My ambition with this mod is to use the convention of historical (or historically plausible) nation names rather than those that are descriptive of the current ruling ideology (ie. German Reich vs. Nazi Germany). I’m not completely there yet, so this is a work in progress. At this stage, Europe and the majors are all done, and I need to focus on South America and Asia next.
Where possible I have used names with a basis in history, or are plausible. An example of this is how I’ve replaced "Neo-Ottoman Empire" with "Empire of the Turks", since I wanted to reflect a Turkish ethnic bias, and I thought Ottomanism in this period was probably not a possibility.
Since there aren’t a great number of Fascist nations to draw inspiration from, I’ve had to get a bit creative but I have tried to remain historically plausible.
I am always open to suggestions.
This mod appears compatible with active saved games. It will conflict with other mods that also change nation titles. I have yet to find a way to sidestep this with the way HOI4 handles localisation files.
Feel free to use this mod for your own purposes, whether editing it to your preference or using in your own mods.
—Other Example Names—
Fascist USA: United National State of America (Abolition of the federal government, and replacing it with a totalitarian regime where the president and military are paramount..plus U.N.S.A sounds pretty evil. 😉 )
Communist USA: United Socialist States of America (Obvious inspiration)
Fascist Yugoslavia: Balkan State (to reflect an attempt at a shared ethnic identity where the state would have primacy, away from the multi-ethnic ambitions of Yugoslavia)
Fascist Lithuania: Grand Duchy of Lithuania (historically existed in centuries past, represents a fascist attempt at appealing to tradition through restoring a monarchy)
Neutral Netherlands: Republic of the United Netherlands (historically existed in centuries past, neutrality would represent a return to old traditions and abandonment of democracy in favour of an authoritarian republic)
Fascist Belgium: Greater Wallonian State (the rexist fascist movement was primary Wallonian, an attempt at power might have meant the primacy of the Wallonian ethnic group instead of the idea of a multi-ethnic Belgium)
Fascist Hungary: Hungarian Regency (while officially the Kingdom of Hungary, it was also known as the Regency due to not actually having a monarch and its leader ruling as regent)
Most of the Communist names are fairly typical, but I’ve brought the sillier ones back in line with reality.
Also changes to many of the default names to their proper official titles; for example "Australia" becomes "Commonwealth of Australia", "Switzerland" is now the "Swiss Confederation", etc.
There won’t be too many surprises, but as far as immersion goes, in my mind, that’s a good thing! 🙂
