Description:

SHATTERED LAND is an alternate history mod for Hearts of Iron IV, which brings the chaotic and turbulent events of Indian independence and partition right into the middle of World War 2.

Shattered Land includes 13 national focus trees for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Burma, Ceylon, Afghanistan, Tibet, Nepal, Bhutan, Sikkim, Goa, Pondicherry, and Maldives with over 1400+ historically inspired national focuses.

Dive deep into British Raj politics with 100+ political leaders and 650+ political advisors across six ideologies: Monarchist, Nationalist, Democratic, Communist, Religious (Islamic), and Religious (Dharmic).

Lead colonial armies, axis collaborators, communist guerillas, and religious militia in the fight for supremacy over the Indian subcontinent with 300+ generals, military staff, and recruitable units.

During the Great War, over a million Indian troops had served overseas for the British cause. 74,000 died and 69,000 were wounded. Indian leaders had hoped that the sacrifices made would help India gain her freedom. Increased taxes, unemployed war veterans, and depleted resources lead to starvation and food riots. The British Raj responded with the Rowlatt Act – allowing indefinite detention and incarceration without trial. However, the Raj eventually had to enact the Government of India Act, 1935 providing for limited autonomy and provincial elections. Resistance grows from many directions; India’s role in a new war may not be decided by Britain alone.

As Jinnah falls ill soon after Independence, many political forces jostle for influence. If Jinnah succumbs, what will become of this newly independent nation facing many threats? And if Jinnah does survive his illness, will he lead the country as a benevolent father of the nation … or will destiny take a more sinister turn?

The British colony of Burma is plentiful in natural resources. As colonial administrators expand infrastructure within Burma and bring in additional labour from India to exploit Burma’s natural wealth, it seems unlikley that the local Burmese will stand by idly.

The drought of 1934 experienced by the British crown colony of Ceylon went from bad to worse as the drought was followed by floods in October and an outbreak of malaria. A severe shortage of rice further aggravated the situation, with the population now facing widespread malnutrition. The tone-deaf collection of funds for British war veterans by colonial authorities may not go down well.

The Great Game is afoot once again in Afghanistan as King Nadir Shah passes away, passing the baton on to young Zahir Shah. As the exiled former King Amanullah Khan eagerly watches with great interest, various tribes across Afghanistan are arming themselves. With many internal factions jostling for power, foreign powers get drawn into the Graveyard of Empires once again.

Even as the Two Nation theory leads to the formation of Pakistan as the homeland of all Muslims across the subcontinent, will Bengalis get justice in East Pakistan? Will they be able to live in solidarity with fellow Muslims? Or will they just be replacing one colonial master with another? What identity do the people seek … one based on land, faith, or language?

The "War In Heaven" update focuses on the Himalayan region and adds focus trees for Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan. Guide the destiny of these Himalayan nations as their pristine homelands stand at risk of becoming blood-soaked chessboards of larger empires. Will the coming global war see existing power structures strengthen their hold or will it be a catalyst for turmoil and change?

Despite their tiny sizes, the colonial enclaves of Goa and Pondicherry remain important as centres of commerce and naval activity, and as cosmopolitan melting pots of Indian and Western cultures. The once-legendary reputation of Maldives as masters of shipbuilding is now a very distant memory thanks to its internal power struggles. As war looms across the Indian Ocean, can these small maritime powers avoid being swallowed by the leviathans that now circle their seas? Through trade, or through piracy, perhaps even the small fish can find a way to eat the bigger fish.
