Description:
Across the Irish Sea – VBCW Update 1.2

Across the Irish Sea spreads the chaos that has engulfed Britain to the newly reworked island of Ireland – with the occupation of Ulster and De Valera’s unwillingness to attack the Royalist Treaty Ports, tensions are rising! Combined with the internal pressures of union agitation, Gaelic impatience, and paramilitary activities, Dublin is in crisis. Across the Irish Sea introduces a brand new six-sided civil war in Ireland, with a huge quantity of focus trees, events, and characters.

However, there is also a large amount of non-Irish content launching alongside Across the Irish Sea. Our foreign intervention mechanic will be launching at last, representing the interest of world powers in the British situation, while you will receive monthly reports in-game about the developing situation in mainland Europe – with six main possible timelines, it will provide dynamic and engaging flavour about the wider world of A Very British Civil War. A number of major cities across Britain have also been reworked, alongside much of the South Coast, adding to the depth and detail of the British map. Changes have also been made to elements of the in-game UI, giving it a very 1930s British aesthetic.

From everyone on the VBCW team, we hope you have fun!

Credits

Having started development all the way back in 2018, a lot of people have helped out with A Very British Civil War. The Modding Co-op has been of great help to us; their admins, the representatives of fellow member-mods, and those who are part of the community have all greatly contributed, whether to helping with resolving bugs, or simply supporting us on our development journey. Special thanks must go to Ismand2508, Seriouscraft, and Overlord for their continuous help, advice, and patience, over the past few years.

On the artistic front, we would be foolish to ignore the contributions made to the mod in 2018 and 2019 by Indyclone77 – many icons made by him back then are still used to this day. Our stunning wonderful menu art was produced, in part, by The WIZARD, while DuKe has often helped to produce much needed portraits at short notice. Many thanks to MnCnNn for allowing him to use his unit models as a basis for our own unique models.

The composition of the development team has greatly changed over the years – it would take too long to name everyone who has helped out in some regard, but two developers in particular deserve special mentions: WelshStalker for his tireless reworking of the Irish map, and Peter_Egham for his painstaking work on planning, structuring, and writing the European lore. But, at the end of the day, none of this would have happened without the stalwart leadership of the mod by SquireBev from 2018 to 2019, and Sluxe from 2019 to 2020.

The greatest thanks must go to Rob Jones, Steven Mortimore, Simon Douglas, and Solway Crafts and Miniatures for the amazing world that they created, and the tabletop community around them that fleshed it out. This mod owes its existence to their work, and to the enthusiasm, energy, and creativity within their community – we hope that this mod is able to capture some of that same spirit and fun that the tabletop gaming element of VBCW has.

Lore

In our timeline, King Edward VIII, widely rumoured to harbour right-wing sympathies, abdicates in 1936 in order to marry American socialite Wallis Simpson. In the VBCW timeline, he doesn’t. What follows is a constitutional crisis and the collapse of the United Kingdom as we know it, as the British Isles are plunged into a bloody and multifaceted, yet curiously sporting and whimsical, civil war.

If you like idea of armed Morris Dancers and Women’s Institute Armoured Columns, if you’ve longed to hear the stirring sound of Jerusalem blaring from the wings of a squadron of dive bombers, if you’ve always wanted to see a fishing trawler with a 25-pounder field gun lashed to its deck, then look no further. A Very British Civil War has all this and more.
