Description:

Mappa Mundi is a complete overhaul mod which turns Hearts of Iron 4 into a mapping tool. You can use it to recreate historical borders from the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 to the present day, or create your own alternate history maps, by using toolpack to transfer states between nations and change country names.

To help you do so, we’ve provided a highly detailed, historically accurate map of 1914, 1936, 1939, 2023, and a blank world as a template. Mappa Mundi also adds about 20000 states, more than twenty times the vanilla game, and over 2000 new releasable nations, to let you shape this map as you see fit.

Compatability

This mod is a complete overhaul of the HOI4 map. It is incompatible with almost all other mods, and it is pointless using gameplay-altering mods alongside Mappa Mundi as it cannot be unpaused. Only graphical and music mods are likely to work alongside MM.

Toolpack is integrated into Mappa Mundi, though we use a modified version that is compatible with our ideology system. Other forks of Toolpack should be disabled when using MM, as they lack this functionality.

The State Transfer Tool mod is not incompatible with Mappa Mundi, but it is redundant, as MM already includes a state transfer tool as part of Toolpack. We also cannot guarantee that future UI updates will not break compatibility with STT, as it is not our chosen tool.

Universal Colored Puppets is not incompatible with Mappa Mundi, but it is redundant, as MM makes puppets share their overlord’s colour.

This mod is NOT ironman compatible, for reasons that should be obvious. This mod is compatible with 1.14 and should be fine with ToA.

No DLC is required to run Mappa Mundi. Having any DLC enabled will not break the mod, but it will not change gameplay in any way (Turning off TfV does disable autonomies within the DLC in Toolpack though). However, it is recommended that you turn off NSB in case you have it to prevent minor bugs.

Integrated Mods

For an easier user experience, Mappa Mundi comes prepackaged with several other mods. If you already use these mods, be sure to disable them before you launch Mappa Mundi, as having duplicate copies can cause errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why can’t I unpause? Why are so many UI elements missing? Why can’t I do anything?
A: Mappa Mundi is not meant for standard gameplay. It’s purely to make maps and alternate history scenarios using Toolpack, for people who don’t want to have to draw them by hand. These UI elements have been removed since they aren’t relevant to this mod’s purpose.

Q: Will you make a playable version of Mappa Mundi?
A: To achieve the level of detail and number of states in Mappa Mundi we had to strip out Hearts of Iron 4’s gameplay. If you were able to unpause, there would be no naval elements, horrible balancing, and too much lag and instability.

Q: Can I use the provinces from Mappa Mundi for my own mod?
A: Absolutely, just give us a mention in your credits.

Q: Why do countries not start in factions or as puppets anymore?
A: For some reason, when a country is in a faction or is a puppet (or both), it slows the process of transferring states. Hence why they’re disabled. You can still use the puppeting tool or create new factions with Toolpack, though this can cause excessive lag.

Q: What’s up with the water?
A: Water has been removed from the game and turned into a "country" with regular states instead of sea zones, meaning you can now edit coastlines, drain lakes, or flood any area simply by using toolpack.

Q: Can I use Mappa Mundi Graphics in vanilla, or with mods other than MM?
A: Technically, yes. However, the Mappa Mundi Graphics submod was designed specifically to work in conjunction with MM. MM doesn’t use ocean textures, and newer versions hide terrain in zoomed out views, so it probably won’t look as nice in vanilla.

Q: How do I transfer states and change ruling parties?
A: On the bottom right of the screen, above the map mode selector, is a small arrow that opens toolpack. Use it.

Q: How do I change a country’s colour?
A: On the top right of the screen is a button that says "SCC." Click it to open the colour selecter, or use cosmetic tags (more information on them can be found in the Mappa Mundi Resources document linked below).

Q: Can I cause vanilla-style civil wars?
A: Toolpack’s civil war function sometimes does not work in Mappa Mundi, but you can still use the "civilwar communism" command to cause a civil war in the country you are playing as, then use toolpack to change the new country’s name. Be sure to save before doing this, as on rare occasions the game can crash when a civil war starts.

Q: Why can’t I see the release nations button?
A: If you encounter UI issues, it is likely because you are not using 1080p. If you cannot use 1080p, reset the game’s UI scaling to 1.0. This may require you to change display mode to Fullscreen.
