Description:
What is Terrible History?

Despite it having terrible in the name, this mod strives to add quality but expansive content to the world of HoI4. Currently, the only nation I’ve added anything for is Italy. They always seem to get the short end of the stick when it comes to this game, so I figured why not start there. Of course I would like to expand to other nations eventually, before No Step Back I was thinking about trying Russia next (I might still do that regardless). Other ideas included revamping Germany’s tree to include a communist path, trees for the Nordic countries, or something for Austria. I have a few more things I want to add to Italy before I focus on a major update though. If I didn’t upload the mod in its current state it would never get uploaded, always something that needs to be fixed; nothing is ever really complete.

As it stands, the main attraction of this mod is a massive 360-strong focus tree for Italy with five main paths (without mutual exclusivity that’s over 60 years of focuses!). This also includes 168 total events, 156 national ideas, some custom GFX, and so much more for Italy. If you ever felt Europe’s underbelly deserved some more love, well, here it is!

Can I, the Subscriber, do Anything?

Yes, actually, you can. For most people, the best thing you can do is simply provide feedback. If there’s something that needs balanced, a bug that needs fixed, or whatever, I would love to hear about it! These things are never perfect, and tweaks will be needed. Another pair of eyes is already a great starting point. I also don’t have the time and energy to playtest this mod thoroughly, so I have to rely on subscribers like you. The other thing is, if you are an artist, I would very much appreciate vanilla style portraits for the characters I add. I cannot give you anything other than credit on the mod page, so I am not flaunting an advertisement for help. If you do not want to help under those terms, that is completely fine, it is purely your choice and if you choose to do it, you agree to said conditions. I’m okay with the portraits that I do have, it would just be nice is all.

Anything else I’m sorry to say I do not need. I’ve tried forming a mod team before, and it did not turn out well. Complimented with my *amazing* time schedule, it’s just not a good fit. I appreciate the enthusiasm, though.

Trello

If you want a more in-depth look at what I’m thinking about doing, or what I’m currently doing, I do have a Trello page for this mod! It lists things I’ve completed, am working on, will work on, will possibly work on, and any issues I or others have noticed within the mod. You can check it out here: https://trello.com/b/4r6hwDYr/terrible-history

Discord Server

I have a discord server, if you’re interested. It’s nothing special, just a way to contact me or others about my mods, submit ideas, or just talk. You know, discord stuff. Make sure to assign yourself a role in #role-assignment to get access to the proper mod channels. Link is here: https://discord.gg/HA29xJM

Other Notes

  • I would like to take a moment to credit the Road to 56 mod for inspiration. Loose inspiration for things like deposing the fascists with a monarchist civil war, the Stresa front and subsequent focuses, and more heavy inspiration for the economic branch (before v1.1) and the Rome Protocols branch. If you’re curious as to why that is, I had initially planned for this mod to be a submod for the Road to 56 mod, but I didn’t want to be held down by Road to 56 bugs and updates. As well as my ambition grew much larger than my initial vision, so I decided to make it an independent mod. Nevertheless, the inspiration remains in the current version, so thank you.
  • Update logging can be found in three separate locations. First, on Steam, in the Change Notes tab on the mod. Second, in the mod download itself. Should be in steamappsworkshopcontent3943602696696038, the file called update_log.txt. Third, is the discord. Join the server, add the role for Terrible History to yourself, and you should be able to see the #th-update-log channel.
  • If you would like to read frequently asked questions, you can either join the discord server for an up-to-date list of the FAQ. Or, in from Patch 1.1.4 onward, faq.txt will be kept in the mod folder, and you can read everything there if you’d like. It’ll be in steamappsworkshopcontent3943602696696038.
