The Red Star Over the Elbe (If Hitler had become a communist)
In 1907, Hitler was admitted to the Political Science Department of the University of Vienna. During his university years, he met Clara Zetkin and studied Marxism. While in university, he published "The Struggle of the Classes," criticizing "finance capital as the true enemy of the German nation." During World War I, he actively promoted anti-war sentiments in Austria and Germany. In 1918, he participated in the German November Revolution and was subsequently arrested by the German government. While imprisoned, he published the "Anti-Capitalist Manifesto," proposing the "Three Principles of the German-Style Socialist Revolution":
1.Smash the Junker-Capitalist Alliance.
2.Establish Workers’ Armaments Factories.
3.Liberate the European Proletariat.
He was released in 1930 and later met Ernst Thälmann, the leader of the German Communist Party. Together, they formed the Communist League, an alliance that synthesized Marxism, National Socialism, and internationalism—three distinct strands of socialism. Subsequently, in 1933, various socialist parties decided to unite. In 1935, they launched actions in the Reichstag (federal parliament) and the Reichsrat (imperial council) to dismiss Otto Braun (the third President of the Weimar Republic). Under pressure, Otto Braun announced his resignation as President of the Weimar Republic on December 30, 1935. The Weimar Republic changed its name to the German Socialist Union Republic, with member states including the Bavarian People’s State, the Democratic Federal Republic of Saxony, and the Rhenish-German People’s Federal Republic.
